Preparing K-12 School Administrators for a Safe Return to School in Fall 2020

Schools are an important part of the infrastructure of communities and play a critical role in supporting the whole child, not just their academic achievement.

This guidance is intended to aid school administrators as they consider how to protect the health, safety, and wellbeing of students, teachers, other school staff, their families, and communities and prepare for educating students this fall.

This guidance is for K-12 school administrators who are preparing for students, teachers, and staff to return to school in fall 2020. School administrators are individuals who oversee the daily operations of K-12 schools, and may include school district superintendents, school principals, and assistant principals.

Updated 3-17-2020 11:38 FAMILIES: If your child left any essential items at the school that they will need in the next 3 weeks, we ask that you plan to come in to pick up items on Wednesday, March 18 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Use the main entrance at all buildings.

Please understand that no more than 10 people may be allowed in the building at a time. Please plan for possible wait time to get in.

Updated 3-16-2020 09:55 Last night the Governor of Iowa recommended all schools in the State close for a period of 4 weeks. Aplington-Parkersburg Community School District will comply with that request. Therefore, effective immediately, all district buildings are closed and all activities are cancelled. This includes any open gym, athletic practice, rehearsal, or any other activity otherwise sanctioned or not by the school district. Facilities will be accessible only to those personnel essential for continuity of operations for this week (3/16-3/20); initially including administrators, business office clerical staff, custodians, maintenance staff, and contractors. We are waiting for further guidance and acceptable processes from the State, Department of Education, and Public Health Department. This is a very dynamic and fluid situation, and more information will be forthcoming as available.

Our highest goals are first and foremost to keep our students, staff, and community safe; support course completion and graduation; and to not overburden students and families. We are striving to meet our public community school responsibilities and serve the larger common good. We will send further communications as information and guidance are secured. You are welcome to contact your building principal if you need to come to school to get any support materials or mobile technology devices. We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding, and calm leadership as educational professionals.
