Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)—Kaleidoscope

Aplington-Parkersburg Community School District

What is the Kaleidoscope program? Kaleidoscope is a Junior Kindergarten, or Kindergarten-Prep program for children who are five years of age by September 15th.

How is Kaleidoscope different than Kindergarten? There are 3 main differences between the two programs – length of day, curriculum, and program location.

Kaleidoscope is a “half-day”, everyday program. Kindergarten is an all-day, everyday program.

Although Kaleidoscope students work on many of the same types of skills as children in the Kindergarten classrooms, the activities, instruction, and instructional materials are not exactly the same. The teacher closely monitors each child’s development and adapts the curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of the children in the classroom. The extra year before Kindergarten allows children to further develop academically, physically, socially, and emotionally. Hopefully, this promotes a more successful school experience in Kindergarten and the years to follow.

Aplington-Parkersburg Schools has only one Kaleidoscope classroom. It is located in the Parkersburg Elementary building. The district currently has Kindergarten classrooms in both the Parkersburg and Aplington Elementary buildings.

Do Kaleidoscope students attend Kindergarten the next year? Yes.

When does Kaleidoscope meet? Kaleidoscope students attend Monday through Friday from 8:15-12:15. Kaleidoscope runs on the same school calendar as the district’s K-12 students.

How do late starts affect Kaleidoscope? Kaleidoscope will meet on days when there is a two-hour late start.

Is transportation provided for Kaleidoscope students? Transportation is available for students who would otherwise be eligible for bussing according to our school bus route guidelines (child lives at least one mile from the Parkersburg Elementary School).

When would I register my child for Kaleidoscope? Registration for Kaleidoscope is the same as registration for the K-12 students.

Is there tuition for Kaleidoscope? No. Kaleidoscope pays registration fees. Those fees are the same as the registration fees for our elementary students.
